Emry grew up on a cattle ranch in Baker, Oregon, working as a cowboy and dreaming of cooking steaks someday in his own restaurant. The rodeo and job prospects brought him to Southern California, where he met and married his wife, Sandy. Together, they worked on catering events with The Hitching Post, a restaurant on the central coast of California. It was here that he honed his grilling skills, doing Santa Maria style BBQ - on a vaquero inspired wood pit grill. When they moved to NE Oregon, Emry began building his own take on those grills, and continued mastering new creations over fire. He began catering in Walla Walla in 2011, and moved into a small cafe in Waitsburg in 2014, where together with Sandy and her brother Chef Jeff, he caters parties in house and out & about Walla Walla Wine Country. The steaks are becoming legend.
Sandy began a career in wine over 20 years ago, after many years of restaurant work, tending bar and catering parties. Tending bar at the Hitching Post in Santa Barbara County led to meeting pioneering winemakers in a newly emerging wine country, and the wine bug began. She began taking courses and attending tastings, and soon began working at Foxen Vineyard, a funky little winery on historic Rancho Tinaquaic in Santa Maria. After a move to the Pacific Northwest, Sandy enrolled in the Enology & Viticulture Program at Walla Walla Community College and graduated in 2006. After 8 years at Tamarack Cellars, she is now partner with Emry in The Q.
Jeff rounds out the team with over 30 years experience as a classically-trained chef. A graduate of The Restaurant School in Philadelphia, Jeff has trained with famed chef Jean-Francois Taquet at Restaurant Taquet on the Main Line of Philadelphia, been a private chef at the home of a prominent attorney, as well as running his own restaurant, "Full of Soup", for 14 years. Jeff moved west to help Emry & Sandy get The Q cafe up & running in 2014, and has enjoyed discovering an incredibly different lifestyle here in the Walla Walla Valley. Jeff and Emry are the ultimate East Meets West - the city guy and the cowboy, working together to create a fusion of gaucho rustic and refined classics.
Together Emry, Sandy & Jeff cater in-house at the cafe in Waitbsurg, or at a location of your choice. Menus are designed individually to suit your event and guests. Whenever possible, ingredients are sourced locally and seasonally to highlight the bounty of the Pacific Northwest.
